Innovation comes to life - Québec life sciences strategy 2017-2027

The Québec government is implementing the 2017–2027 Québec Life Sciences Strategy to bolster the Québec life sciences industry’s position of excellence abroad, accelerate Québec’s economic growth, and take full advantage of changes in recent years in the sector and future opportunities.

The strategy has a $205-million budget allowance for the first five years of its implementation.

Under the strategy, the government has set four objectives:

  • increase investments in research and innovation in the life sciences sector overall;
  • promote the establishment of innovative firms and ensure their growth;
  • attract new private investments;
  • more broadly integrate innovation into the health and social services network.

More specifically, the strategy sets two ambitious targets:

  • attract by 2020 $4 billion in private investments in Québec;
  • ensure that Québec ranks by 2027 among the top five North American hubs in the sector.

Highlights:

  • more than 30 800 industrial jobs and almost as many jobs in research centres and allied service firms;
  • some 630 firms;
  • the impact on Québec’s gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated at $5.6 billion (2014).
