The power of water, the engine of quebec's energy industry
Development of electricity production, transportation, and distribution—essentially from the hydro system, and more recently from wind turbines—is a significant engine of the Québec economy. These sectors account for $4 to 5 billion in investments every year and support more than 50,000 permanent jobs.
The Ministère de l’Énergie et des Ressources naturelles has made public The 2030 Energy Policy. Québec has a vast hydrographic network, part of which has been developed for hydroelectric production. Thanks to hydroelectricity, Québec has a competitive and renewable source of energy with minimal effects on the environment and climate.
Québec should have available an installed wind power capacity of about 4,000 MW, almost 10% of its peak electricity demand. Wind power is an excellent complement to hydroelectricity.
The presence of such a resource has encouraged the emergence of specialized suppliers of products and services associated with hydroelectricity and bolstered the expertise of engineering consulting firms in Québec.
Hydro-Québec produces, transports, and distributes electricity. The Government of Québec is the sole shareholder of Hydro-Québec, which produces its electricity exclusively from renewable sources (mainly hydropower).
